Gray squirrels (Sciurus carolinensis) are small, nimble, flexible creatures that can fit through gaps as small as 1.5 inches. Their expert climbing and chewing abilities give them easy access to vulnerable homes, making them very prevalent pests (or nuisance wildlife) in Kentucky.
Given their many traits, squirrels can enter homes in various ways, lured by the feeling of warmth or the smell of food near your home. Some of the most common of these methods include damaged roofing, doors, windows, chimneys, vents, and cracked walls or foundations.
Squirrels can be elusive creatures in your home, so it is crucial to look for signs to determine if you have any in your home. Some signs include chew marks on wires, plastic, wood, and packaging; scurrying and scratching sounds; droppings; and rancid smells. Inside your attic, which is their favored spot, look for signs of pathways in the insulation, nesting sites, and droppings.
