Kissing bugs, belonging to the subfamily Triatominae, are primarily nocturnal and solitary insects that seek out clutter and waste around residential environments for optimal shelter. They are particularly attracted to warmth and light, especially after sundown. The presence of these environmental factors not only draws them to your property but can also encourage their continued presence, increasing the risk of a household infestation.
Common entry points for these pests include open doors and windows, gaps or cracks in walls or foundations, damaged seals, and infested firewood brought indoors. Typical harborages can be found in locations such as dog houses, sheds, beneath decks and porches, chicken coops, and similar structures.
The kissing Bug is slowly making its presence known within Kentucky.
Signs indicative of kissing bugs in your living space may include the insects themselves, which typically measure between 0.6 and 0.8 inches in length. They possess a reddish-brown body and a distinctive cone-shaped head, often located individually or in small groups. Kissing bugs tend to hide in dark, secluded areas close to their hosts, camouflaging themselves in cracks and crevices. Common hiding spots include under beds, in pet bedding, and within furniture or wall cavities. Additionally, you might notice small bloodstains on bedding, bite marks similar to those inflicted by mosquitoes or bedbugs, and symptoms associated with Chagas disease, which may also indicate an infestation.
Given their role as vectors for Chagas disease, it is crucial to take preventive measures to thwart potential entry and eliminate any existing infestations. Strategies include sealing any entry points, maintaining closed doors when not in use, repairing damaged seals, turning off outdoor lights at night, reducing clutter both indoors and outdoors, and thoroughly inspecting pets and belongings before bringing them inside. Kissing bug activity typically peaks during warm evenings and nights from late spring through early fall.
