A note from the President:
“So… fall is coming (or already here, depending on when you read this) and you know the stink bugs are coming too! But, you may not be sure if what you have seen is actually stink bugs, or why they are getting in your house, or how to deal with them once inside. And what if there was a way to prevent them in the first place? All this, and more, is discussed in this edition of “The Pest Perspective,” only this time, you’re being introduced to a brand new writer. She’s only 15 years old and comes to the table with unique perspectives that we’re sure will come out in her writing, along with, of course, my editing for now. And yes, the art is all hers!” -Matthew Hess
Stink Bug Appearance
At 14-17 mm long, the brown marmorated stink bug (Halyomorpha halys) is easy to spot once you know what to look for. With its brown and white banded stripes along the legs, antennae, and the edges of its abdomen, you’ll spot him right away. Additionally, you’ll note his brown-grey colored body, smooth rounded shoulders, and pale yellow-brown or white underside. Once you train yourself to spot these guys, it will come naturally!
Why are Stink Bugs in Kentucky?
About the decade of alternative rock music (1998, in fact), the first sighting of the brown marmorated stink bug was reported and recorded in Allentown, PA. This “true bug” species, belonging to the Pentatomidae family, is native to Beijing, China, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan and is suspected to have arrived via shipping containers at port. Once on our shores, they began to make their way north along the interstate into the southeastern states, including Kentucky, and spread throughout the countryside. The brown marmorated stink bug can now be found in nearly every state in the U.S. and has become, in many places, a serious nuisance, destroying crops and fruit trees and invading human structures.
Why Are There Stink Bugs in My Home?
Like most insects, the stink bug prefers warmer temperatures, something autumn and winter do not bring. These changes will prompt the stink bug, and other pests to search for warmer areas, often leading them straight into your house. This entry may be through, poorly sealed doors and windows, gable vents, soffit, cracks and crevices in brick, mortar, or foundations, and many other areas.
How Do I Keep the Stink Bugs Out?
Of course, no one wants to live in a house full of stink bugs, so you likely want to know how to keep these pests out, right? Of course you do! There are many home remedies and DIY products boasting the ability to keep stink bugs and other insects out during the colder seasons. While in some cases, these may work, most people report failure. It’s always best to be prepared, and Four Seasons can bring you to that place of preparation!
Is Stink Bug Treatment Necessary?
While stink bugs may not directly cause harm to humans or our homes, a pest is a pest, and these insects are certainly pests. If invading our homes wasn’t enough, these pesky creatures release a foul odor when you crush them, the most common form of killing them once inside your home! So, if you can stop these bugs from coming in in the first place, that’s the route you will want to take! IS stink bug treatment necessary? That’s for you to decide!
Tips To Keep Stink Bugs Out This Fall
With the relief of the arrival of fall comes, unfortunately, stink bugs. And while you may be thinking, ‘There’s plenty of time to stop them later,’ I would urge you to reconsider. The time to start keeping these pests at bay is now, unless you plan to spend your winter season living with them.
Brown marmorated stink bugs actually spend the winter in warm places, like the attic or walls of your home. Once cozy, they are there until spring, and, unfortunately for you, they will make their presence known all winter long, especially on the warmer days.
- To help keep stink bugs out, here’s a short list of things you can do:
