The Most Common Spiders In Your Somerset KY Home

Transcribed from The Pest Perspective Episode “Spider Control in Williamsburg KY” with pest instructor Hadassah Hess

As the summer comes to an end and things are winding down, you may come across some pesky little arachnids and, consequently, their webbing. Though sometimes it can simply be a little spider crawling in when you or the kids left the door open, there could be a bigger, underlying problem that needs attention. Let’s take a look at the most common spiders you can expect to see in your Somerset KY home.

While there are many different types of spiders in Kentucky, some of the more common to find invading your Williamsburg KY home are:

  • The common house spider
  • The jumping spider
  • The wolf spider

These spiders are nonvenomous and pose no serious threat to humans. More than anything, they are simply a nuisance.

The common house spider is often seen in lower corners of rooms, under furniture, and in undisturbed areas around the home.

The common house spider

There are many types of jumping spiders and many are extremely beneficial to our ecosystem.

The jumping spider

Although wolf spiders are beneficial insects, they do pack a powerfully painful bite.

Other than these, there are two more risky spiders you could encounter. These are the only truly venomous spiders in Kentucky:

  • The black widow
  • The brown recluse spider

The black widow and Brown recluse are thankfully nonaggressive. In fact, before they will bite, either spider must be pressed against. This could happen if a brown recluse made its way into your bed and you rolled over on it, or if a black widow was present while you were gardening and was inadvertently touched.

The black widow usually only bites when pressed upon and threatened.

The Black Widow

While the brown recluse may not be one of the most common spiders in your somerset ky home, they can still be readily present.

The Brown Recluse

Regardless of their venomous or nonvenomous status, no spider is a welcome guest in most of our homes! And.. with Four Seasons on your side, these arachnids can kiss life goodbye, and you can feel comfortable in your own, spider-free home!

How Do These Pests Get Inside My House?

Black widows, common house spiders, jumping spiders, and wolf spiders are going to exploit the cracks, crevices, and openings outside of our houses to gain access indoors. These entry points are most often found in poorly sealed doors, cracked or broken windows, torn window screens, pet doors, and more.

While the brown recluse may also exploit these conditions, they are often introduced through objects brought into the home. Such items include used or antique furniture, previously stored or warehoused products, and commodities that may have remained stored and unmoved for a lengthy period. But don’t be too alarmed, a single sighting poses little threat, and with a team of experts like Four Seasons Pest Solutions on your side, You won’t have much to worry about!

How Can I Stop Spiders from Getting into My Home?

So, the next big question is, how do you stop them from getting into your home in the first place? Most of the spiders you will find in your home are small and generally come in through cracks and crevices, or sneak in through doors and windows. Sealing or repairing gaskets in those areas can play an important role in reducing arachnids inside your castle.

Entry points are important, but deeper still, is what brought the pest near the home to begin with.  All pests require moisture and this includes spiders. Eliminating damp conditions along the perimeter of the home, under the home, and inside the home not only reduce pests like spiders and their food sources, but also extend the life of your home. Using a dehumidifier during peak humid conditions is especially favorable.

Another way to help keep the spiders away is reduce clutter inside and out. Anywhere there is clutter, stored items, and areas of little to no disturbance, your fanged friends are apt to congregate, feed, reproduce, and infest! So declutter that home and yard, get yourself into a regular cleaning groove, and hire Four Seasons Pest Solutions for your regular pest maintenance. Then you can relax knowing you won’t have to worry about any spiders!
