Transcript from the video ‘How Our Exclusions Work’
with pest expert Matthew S. Hess
There are a few questions we regularly receive regarding how pest exclusions work. For those who are not aware, pest exclusion is an eco-friendly addition to regular pest control and works to effectively eliminate the access pests may have to enter your home or business. By eliminating these entryways, pests must look elsewhere for harborage.
How Do I Know If I Need A Pest Exclusion?
What we always say is if you’re dealing with pests inside, pest exclusion might work for you. Of course, our team of inspectors would first want to qualify your home for an exclusion and then offer a plan designed to fit your specific needs.
Ultimately, though, if you have pests indoors and want to keep them outdoors where they belong, you might look into our pest exclusion services.
What Are The Benefits Of Pest Exclusion?
There are several benefits to having a pest exclusion. Of course, the most obvious one is to stop pests from entering your home or business. This can be important, especially when wildlife is involved. Pests like raccoons and bats can potentially carry and transmit rabies, so you wouldn’t want those in your home. Additionally, wasps, bees, and other stinging insects can be not only a nuisance but potentially deadly to someone who is allergic.
Besides that, exclusions may offer some energy-related savings by reducing holes, gaps, cracks, and other areas where heat loss may occur.
What Happens During An Exclusion?
Essentially, our inspectors isolate the specific pest problem(s) and then look for entryways. These entryways could be as simple as a bad door seal to as complicated as missing ridge vent closures. Cracks, crevices, gaps, and holes in siding, roofing, windows, doors, plumbing penetrations, and anywhere else around the structure, must be located and properly repaired. This begins at the foundation extending to the roof ridge and everywhere in between.
Any deficient areas we discover in the inspection will be proposed for exclusion. Once approved, we will seal these areas up with a variety of available materials. These may include door sweeps, window trim, ridge vent closures, metal roofing closures, vent screens, caulking, soffit, facia, or whatever the problem area requires.
Sealant is one of the many products used in exclusions.
Can I Do My Own Pest Exclusion?
Sometimes homeowners and business owners like to save a few bucks by doing their own pest-related work. We’ve seen all kinds of half-attempts at pest exclusion, and honestly, it’s almost always a disaster.
While pest exclusion isn’t necessarily difficult, not everyone is cut out for it. Even within our own staff here at Four Seasons, there are only a few of us who are qualified to do the work. It takes a special ability to understand the way homes are built, the way pests behave, and how to use the available products to properly stop pest entry while maintaining a pleasing aesthetic.
This is a homeowner’s attempt at excluding bats from entering a bathroom. This is why it’s better to leave exclusion to the pros here at Four Seasons!
