Did you know that it’s the time of year when skunks are most active? Skunk mating season occurs from late winter through early spring, typically February through March. During this time, male skunks… (think Pepe LePew)… are searching for mates, so they’ll be exploring new areas, traversing up to several miles. This means you’ll likely see them crossing roads, entering your property, and maybe even sniffing out your black cat… especially if it has a white stripe! (Not really.)
Females will also become more active during this time, but won’t travel nearly as far. However, they are just as likely to enter your property. The most obvious sign that a skunk has visited is, of course, the smell. But in addition to the scent, you may also notice holes in your lawn where they’ve been digging for food! If the odor is strong and lingering, and you notice several small holes in the lawn or landscaping, it’s possible a new tenant is taking up residence nearby. The more you know about skunks, the better equipped you’ll be if they invade your property.
If you find a skunk or their evidence on your property, it’s better not to engage, since skunks not only possess quite an awful smell but are also known for the potential to transmit several diseases! While you can DIY your own skunk removal, attempting to handle the problem on your own could result in the skunk attacking you, most likely by releasing its spray. The best course of action when dealing with a skunk is to call your local professionals at Four Seasons Pest Solutions, and let them take all the risk!
If you haven’t yet experienced a skunk visitor and prefer to keep it that way, it’s a good idea to eliminate both food and shelter. Clearing out food sources, such as birdseed and pet food, securing trash and compost bins, and having your lawn treated for grubs are important steps to reduce skunk invasions. Without food, nesting and shelter are likely the only lures remaining. Reducing those can practically make your property skunk-free… well… sort of. The occasional skunk may wander by, and you may even smell their scent. However, if that only happens randomly, there’s probably not much to be concerned with.
Here at Four Seasons Pest Solutions, our Nuisance Wildlife Control team is skilled at not only removing skunks but also preventing them from taking up residence where they aren’t invited. Simply call our office at 1-877-999-2849 and you’ll find out why everyone says, “It’s good to have Four Seasons on your side!”
And remember, it’s okay to live among pests… but you don’t have to live with them!
