The House Mouse is highly adaptable and can enter homes through various means, and its rapid reproduction can lead to significant damage if an infestation occurs.
House mice typically enter homes through damaged doors and windows, cracks in foundations, roofs, and walls, improperly sealed vents or pipes, plumbing penetrations, and even through items brought inside. They are attracted to buildings by food, warmth, water, and sheltered nesting areas.
Although mice can be elusive, there are several signs to look for if you suspect an infestation. These include chewed packaging or seals, droppings and nests, urine stains, an ammonia smell, or even unusual changes in your pet’s behavior.
If you don’t think you have a mouse problem and simply want to prevent a possible infestation, there are several precautions you can take. Seal any openings or cracks, as mice can fit through holes as small as ¼ inch. Replace faulty door and window seals, maintain a clean environment in your home, store food in airtight containers, and be cautious when purchasing used or second-hand items such as furniture or appliances.
