In Kentucky, March doesn’t just bring in the warm air; it also brings mosquitoes! With mosquitoes come several dangers, including common mosquito-borne illnesses like West Nile Virus. Although the chances of contracting West Nile Virus may not be as high as other illnesses, if your property harbors mosquitoes like the Culex pipiens, the risk is present.
Becoming acquainted with and understanding West Nile, how it’s transmitted, where it comes from, the health risks, and how to prevent it, are steps in the direction to safeguard your health and the health of those you love.
West Nile virus (WNV) is a viral infection primarily transmitted through the bite of infected mosquitoes, specifically the Culex pipiens species, which is common in Kentucky. It is a single-stranded RNA that causes West Nile Fever and a member of the genus Flavivirus, which contains yellow fever virus and dengue fever as well. West Nile is Kentucky’s most common mosquito-borne illness.
Not everyone bitten by the Culex pipiens will contract West Nile. In fact, many may not. However, only 20% of infected individuals exhibit symptoms while the other 80% may only show the standard signs of a mosquito bite, like swelling or itching.
Of the 20% who may develop mild symptoms, fever, rash, headache, body aches, diarrhea, and vomiting may occur. In rare cases, less than 1% of those infected can develop severe neurological diseases, leading to complications such as encephalitis or meningitis. There is currently no known vaccines or medicines to prevent West Nile virus.
The transmission cycle begins when a mosquito bites an infected bird, which acts as a reservoir for the virus. The mosquito then bites a human or another mammal, introducing the virus into the bloodstream. The presence of stagnant water, particularly in late spring and summer, creates ideal breeding conditions for mosquitoes, increasing the risk of transmission.
While most cases of West Nile virus are mild, flu-like symptoms, the potential for severe illness poses a significant health risk, especially for vulnerable populations such as the elderly, individuals with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women. Symptoms can escalate quickly, so recognizing the signs and seeking medical attention is crucial.
